Ise Udon (Soft Udon with Thick Soy Sauce)

A specialty of Ise: very thick, soft and fluffy udon coated in a dark, rich sauce made with tamari soy sauce. It is not as salty as it looks; the sweet, savory sauce clings nicely to the soft noodles. The classic version has only chopped green onion on top. One reason for the softness is said to be that noodles were kept boiling for a long time so they could be served instantly to pilgrims visiting Ise Grand Shrine. A local dish born in the fishing villages of the Shima area. Sukiyaki made with Matsusaka beef, one of Japan's most famous luxury wagyu. It has fine marbling and fat with a low melting point, giving a melt-in-your-mouth texture and an elegant sweetness. Sashimi of Japanese spiny lobster, Ise-Shima's signature luxury ingredient. It is said to have been named ise-ebi because so many were caught in the sea off Ise. Akafuku Mochi (Rice Cake with Bean Paste)

Ise's most famous mochi, made by a long-established shop in Ise. Smooth red bean paste covers soft mochi, and the three lines pressed into the paste are said to represent the clear stream of the Isuzu River near Ise Grand Shrine. Enjoy its refined sweetness and soft mochi. At the main store on Oharaimachi street, you can eat it with bancha tea while looking out at the river. It does not keep long, so eat it soon if you buy it as a souvenir. It has long been loved as a memento of pilgrimages to Ise.

A steamed sweet of rice flour and sugar made in the Ise area. Compared with Nagoya's uiro, it is said to be springier with a lighter sweetness. It comes in white, brown sugar, matcha, azuki and other flavors, all simple and gentle. Many people buy it as a souvenir on their way back from Ise Grand Shrine. It is sold at confectioners and souvenir shops in Ise. It is also delicious chilled. With its mild sweetness, it suits even people who do not usually like sweets.
